RESUMO

Growing steadily, non-transmitted chronic diseases have already reached a significant parcel of Brazilian population; hypertension and obesity lie among the most worrying diseases as they present a multifactor aetiology in their origins. This study aimed at investigating the prevalence of hypertension among obese children and adolescents and at analysing its relation with anthropometric measures. The study involved 129 obese individuals, ages ranging from 7 to 14 years, both sexes, who looked for assistance at Hospital Regional de Mato Grosso do Sul, located in Campo Grande -MS, between August 2005 and July 2006. The evaluation consisted of anthropometric measures and blood pressure measurements. The data were then analysed statistically through BioEstat 3.0 program, which indicated the prevalence of hypertension in both sexes (male 15,79% and female 26,39%), with no significant differences between each other. The same was seen in different age groups, especially among those aged 13 to 14 (52,38%). Results indicated that hypertension has relation with the Body Mass Index (BMI) and with the percentage of fat, but not with the Waist-Hip Relation. This leads to the conclusion that, in the group studied, hypertension is related to the amount of body fat, independently of its location. Treatment strategies for both diseases at an early age constitute, therefore, imminent needs, since prevalence as high as that found in this study had only been previously detected in over-sixties from Campo Grande. Key words: Obesity, hypertension, child, adolescent.
