RESUMO

The Campas Beach is located in Tamandarà Town, Pernambuco, Brazil (8 42`00â and 8 51â 00â S, 35 03â 45â and 35 06`45â W). In the last years the tourism has been stressing this marine ecosystem. These human impacts can damage both, imidiatly and at long term, including the areas used as primary contact. This first research in the area was carried out to assess the seasonal and spatial phytoplankton biomass, composition and ecolgy, and also the hydrology and rainfall. Abiotic parameters (water temperature, salinity and pH) data were obtained in situ, co-currently with phytoplankton samples. Collections were made in two fixed stations during low and high tides, in the rainy (June, July, August/2003), and in the dry (November and December/2003 and Jannuary/2004) through horizontal hauls with a plankton net 64μm of mesh size, during 3 minutes. The chlorophyll a was obtained by the spectrophotometric method. The minimum water temperature was registered in July/2003 (25.4ÂC), and the maximum was 29.2ÂC in December and January. The pH was alcaline (average 7.48). The phytoplankton biomass varied from 0.67mg.m-3 in January/2004 to 5.38mg.m-3 in July/2003, both during low tide in Station 1. The microphytoplankton was represented by 135 infrageneric taxa belonging to Bacillariophyta (82.22%), Cyanophyta (5.19%), Dinophyta (6.67%), Chlorophyta (4.44%) and Euglenophyta (1.48%). Asterionellopsis glacialis.dominated in the area. Thirteen species were very frequent mostly belonging to the Bacillariophyta Division. Most species were tichoplanktonic, mainly due the local hydrodynamism which causes the microorganisms ressuspension. The Campas Beach can be characterized as an oligothrophic system. This oligothrophy may be a consequence of the low input of nutrients. The results suggest the adoption of strategies of environment intervention with detailed studies about the impacts in order to implant a conservation and sustanable management and also do develop an Environment Education program
