RESUMO

Several clinical trials have been developed to evaluate the speech perception sounds in children because the need to study exactly which listening skills the children develop from individual hearing aids and / or cochlear implant use. These procedures provide standardized measurements of child development, allowing analyze its evolution, comparison between groups and evaluate rehabilitation programs. However few of these tests are available in Portuguese. In audiology area some of these instruments have been translated, adapted and validated to the Portuguese language and have been used in clinical protocols of private and public hearing health services referenced by the Health Department. Few of available tools can evaluate all auditory skills, which hamper to follow the acquisition process of child. The Functional Auditory Performance Indicators (FAPI) is recommended by Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) for audiological evaluation of hearing skills in children with hearing loss and it is available in Brazilian Portuguese (Brazilian FAPI) but need validation and further research about its reliability. This studys target is to validate the Brazilian FAPI and its reproducibility, by means of applying it in hearing children resulting the expected score for each age group from birth to five years old. A review on the Brazilian FAPI translation was performed through analysis of hearing skills studies, and with a formal refinement with the author at the University of Colorado, which caused an update on the inventory. The Brazilian FAPI was applied to thirty children within normal audiological limits and the values were statistically analyzed to evaluate the reproducibility and correlation between auditory skills and age. The outcomes of this work is a revised and updated version of Brazilian FAPI, its validation, the elaboration of its application manual and the development scores for auditory skills according to age. The application manual was important to systematize the application by different evaluators. In this work was concluded that the Brazilian FAPI had high reproducibility and high statistical correlation between the development of hearing skills with age and this instrument was validated enabling its use by different evaluators and for different populations.
