RESUMO

Epilepsy is a very common neurological condition in the childhood, that reveals a high incidence of psychosocial difficulties that affect the family s and the patient s quality of life. The purpose of this research was to verify the effectiveness of the support group, in the identificationand explanation offamily variables linked to epilepsy. Pre-tests questionnaires were applied to parents of 21 children with benign epilepsy of the childhood recently diagnosed, from 5 to 15 years, who participated in the support groups of the Psychology section at HC/Unicamp. There was a presentation of an educational video and consequent discussion on the epilepsy and the involved psychological aspects. Following, there was the application of the post-test questionnaire 1 to verify the changes happened in the parents regarding the behavior and beliefs. After six months, there was the application of the post-test 2 to evaluate the persistence of the changes that had happened. The beliefs that most appeared were: fear of the child swallowing the tongue during the seizures (76.19%), fear of a future mental disease (66.67%). Facing the first seizures, fear, confusion and sadness appeared. In the relationship with the child, 76.19% ofthe parents presented overprotection and 90.48% expected a new seizure. In the post-test 1, all the parents a:tIirmedthat the information offered had modified the beliefs. In the posttest 2, 80.95% didn t report great doubts about epilepsy. Most of the parents (90.48%) considered their relationship with their children better, and 85.71% have changed the behaviors in the relation with their children. The demystification of beliefs and prejudices, through appropriate information on the disease, supplied from the groups, influencedthe family positively, prevented behavior alterations and guaranteed effective care in the attendance to the child with epilepsy.
