RESUMO

The cerbB-2 protein has been sufficiently studied for its importance as prognostic factor of the breast cancer, mainly in the chemotherapy associations. To eliminate the subjectivity in the interpretation of the conventional immunohistichemistry method, this study aims to quantify, morphometrically, the immunostain of the cerbB-2 protein expressed in breast tumors. Mammary fragments of normal tissues (n=10) and with tumoral disease (invasive ductal carcinoma ,CDI , n=51, fibroadenoma, n=11), were fixed in formalin, processed and embedded in paraffin. Hematoxylin and eosin sections were examined to confirm the diagnosis. Slices (4 mm) were incubated with antibody solution for one hour at room temperature. The staining pattern was visualized by incubation in solution containing diaminobenzidine and hydrogen peroxide. The morphometric analysis was carried out using a digital image analysis workstation based on OPTIMASÂ software. From the results it can be concluded that the superexpression of cerbB-2 into breast carcinoma cases is a phenomenon according to the period of proliferation of the neoplastic cells and when analised the fibroadenomaâs cases, this marker does not shown any correlation with the staining pattern. On the oder hand, fibroadenomas presented similar results to the normal mammary tissue. On the other hand, fibroadenomas presented similar results to the normal mammary tissue. There were not having significant differences between the different qualitative scores and the digital morphometric analysis, and those findings suggesting the necessity for more specific studies about the histopathologic interpretations
