RESUMO

In the epidemiological transition, dyslipidemia is an important arteriogenic factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 1538 male and female adults aged >25 years, residents in urban and rural areas in the state of Pernambuco (Brazil), the aim of which was to estimate the prevalence of dyslipidemia as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and analyze its interaction with preventable/changeable risk factors that are particular to lifestyle. The prevalence of the conditions was analyzed by region. Univariate and hierarchical multivariate analyses were performed for the evaluation of associations between hypertriglyceridemia and the following variables: gender, age, waist circumference, body mass index, income, geographical region, schooling, smoking habits and physical activity. A high prevalence of dyslipidemia was found, ranging from 30 to 50%; cholesterol and LDL were similar between urban and rural areas; there was a temporal tendency toward an increase in dyslipidemia (1997-2006). Specifically considering hypertriglyceridemia, no association was found with physical activity in the univariate analysis. In the multivariate analysis, smoking habits and schooling lost significance. The results reveal a high prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia and a greater risk among males, the elderly, obese individuals, those with higher incomes and residents of metropolitan Recife. Follow up on the prevalence of dyslipidemia allows the adequate planning of preventative actions for cardiovascular disease, as these variables, especially triglyceride, can be improved by a change in lifestyle
