RESUMO

Cytological studies were carried out based on thirteen Species in seven families of climbers in the Santa Genebra Forest Reserve: Canavalia parviflora, Canavalia picta, Centrosema sagitattum Mascagnia (Fabaceae ), Dalechampia pentaphylla (Euhorbiaceae), anisopetala, Stigmaphyllon lalandianum (Malpighiaceae), Merremia macrocalyx (Convolvulaceae), Momordica charantia (Cucurbitaceae), Passiflora miersii (Passifloraceae), Serjania caracasana, Serjania fuscifolia, Serjania meridionalis, Urvillea laevis (Sapindaceae). Their chromosome numbers were analyzed. In ten species the chromosomes were measured and for six of these species it was possible to construct the chromosomal ideograms based on caryological data. Six of these chromosomic counts were made for the first time. A comparison between the chromosome numbers and the evolution of the climbing habit was made. This analysis could only be obtained for four species, since there was great difficulty in finding information about the habit of the species cited in literature. As the number of species analyzed does not represent enough data, it is not possible yet to establish a relationship between numerical chromosome alterations and the climbing habit. Only for Serjania this relationship is possible, although more chromosomic studies in Sapindaceae are required to confirm this hypothesis.
