RESUMO

This research discusses the restrains and possibilities engaged in the forest fragments preservation strategies. Our analysis focuses on social actors´s representations and meanings about the natural world, particularly the reserve of Mata Santa Genebra, Campinas, São Paulo; it discusses the role and influence of scientific knowledge on forest fragment management plans; and the complex relationship between human beings and the natural world, as well as between themselves, as a major aspect for the construction of identities. Thus, baring in mind all existing difficulties to materialize the phantasmatic preservation of forest fragments it points out possible paths that might guide Environmental Education activities, and lead to the conservation of forest in a democratic perspective.
