RESUMO

Nowadays there is a growing interest in the study of linguistic change, and, above all, in the grammaticalization process. This monography investigates the history of prepositions used in the corpus of the Regra de São Bento in Latin, Portuguese and Italian, focusing on DIRECTION, LOCALIZATION and PATH. With regard to DIRECTION the Portuguese prepositions a, para, até, em and the prepositional phrases para com and para trás de were analyzed, as well as the Italian prepositions a, con, da, in and verso and the prepositional phrase fino a. As for LOCALIZATION, the Portuguese prepositions em, desde and sob were studied, as well as the prepositional phrases diante de, em face de, fora de, junto a and por ocasião de, and the Italian prepositions in, secondo, su and tra, and the prepositional phrases davanti a, fuori di and in mezzo a. As for the concept of PATH, the prepositions por/per and durante and the Italian prepositions per and durante were analyzed. We started with the Latin prepositions, compared them to the Portuguese and Italian prepositions that came from Latin, and finally proceeded to the study of the their grammaticalization processes. We also verified whether the Portuguese and Italian prepositions kept or not the meanings of the corresponding Latin prepositions, as well as the new grammaticalization processes that occurred in both languages in search of new ways to express these concepts.
