RESUMO

The roots of the Portuguese languages prepositions a, em and para can be traced back to the latin prepositions ad, in and prepositional phrase per ad. These simple morphemes have had various meanings and use throught the centuries and have expressed not only simple concrete ideas of displacement of things and/or person but also the most abstract notions of dedication, devotion and attribution. This paper is intended to study the grammaticalization process undergone by the preposition a in representative texts of the 16th and 17th centuries, and to investigate the interference of semantic fields in the prepositions a, em and para identifying the details of their uses.
