RESUMO

The Purple Ipe (Tabebuia avellanedae), a tree of the Bignoniacea family found in Brazil, is known by the popular medicine as antitumoral agent against some neoplasias, between them the colorretal cancer. The objective of the present work is experimentally to study the antitumoral action of β- lapachone, that is an extracted constituent of purple ipe, in colonic carcinogenesis azoximethane-induced in mice. 50 mice divided in 5 groups had been used: group I: AOM; group II: β-lapachone; group III: vehicle (diluente); group IV: vehicle + AOM; e group V: β-lapachone + AOM. Presence of aberrant crypt foci was observed in all the animals of groups I and IV, 50% in group II and 90% in group V. It concluded that the azoximetano induces injuries of the type aberrant crypt foci hyperplastic and dysplastic in cólon of mice and that b-lapachone extracted of purple ipe did not present protective effect of the induced injuries for the azoximetano in colon of mice.
