RESUMO

Brazil is the biggest coffee producer in the world and its estimate of production is expected and commented all over the coffee market. In spite of that, there is no methodology for an anticipated preview of the harvest in Brazil. The main purpose of this work was to develop and to test a simple and objective method to estimate the coffee productivity in different regions, cultivars and spacing. Ninety three a stand of coffee, called Experimental Units (EUs), were evaluated. These included eight EUs in SÃo Paulo State, 58 EUs in the south of Minas State and 27s EU in Minas Gerais savanna, all in Cooxupà (Cooperativa Regional dos Cafeicultores em GuaxupÃ, Ltda.) area. The average of coffee beans from the 4th and 5th productive nodes, the height of each coffee tree and the length in meters of the coffee tree row per hectare were sampled both in March and in December. By those pieces of information the Phenological Index of Production (PIP) was obtained. The productivity estimate was visually determined in the same EUs. After EU harvesting and with the real productivity values, a productive estimate was determined by linear regression equation, where y is the estimate in bags/ hectare, and x is the PIP. The equations for December in Minas savanna and in the south of Minas Gerais were the same, , with the coefficients of variation 0.99 and 0,95. For March the estimate equation was both for savanna and south of Minas Gerais with coefficient of variation of 0.99 and 0.96, respectively. Clustering the regions together did not change the equation coefficient, being 0,0004 for December and 0,0005 for March with coefficient of determination 0,96 and 0,97, respectively. The method showed to be efficient in the estimate for productivity of coffee in an objective way
