RESUMO

The increasing demand for mobile communications services without a corresponding increase in spectrum allocation has motivated the development of new techniques to improve spectrum utilization. The Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and adaptive antenna array are two approaches that show real promise for increasing spectrum efficiency. Initially, a study about antenna arrays is presented. The Direction of Arrival (DOA) estimation problem is addressed, where the classical DOA estimators found in literature are discussed, and the Bayesian estimator, whose estimation principle is based on Bayes Rule, is presented and evaluated. It is shown that the Bayesian estimator outperforms the classical estimators in all scenarios under study. Next, the Bayesian beamformer is presented, and its performance in solving the signal estimation problem is investigated. Finally, the behavior of the Bayesian beamformer when applied for data estimation in the CDMA reverse channel is evaluated. It is shown, through simulations in MATLAB environment, a significant improvement in the overall system performance in terms of bit error rate, when the traditional RAKE receiver is used in conjunction with the Bayesian beamformer.
