RESUMO
The study reported here comprehends a qualitative empirical research, of an exploratory nature, with the objective of empirically illustrating some conclusions of the author s doctoral dissertation, and in particular those suggesting that certain factors (moderators - independent variables) under the organization s control may mediate the effects (dependent variables) that layoffs produce on the organization itself, on survivors and on dismissed individuals. The methodology involved an in-depth comparative analysis of a panel composed of 4 firms in Brazil that have conducted layoffs in recent years, and it includes the collection and structured comparison of data from several sources, including management, unions, community leaders, dismissed personnel and survivors.
