RESUMO

The Petiveria alliacea LinnÃ, a popularly known as tipim, guinà and also, atipim; belongs to the family Phytolaccaceae and stands out for its pharmacological activity in infectology, rheumatology and oncology. This is one of the 10 plants most used in Afro-Brazilian cults in the city of Recife, Brazil. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of the aqueous extract (EA) of Petiveria alliacea Linnà in rats. For that, it were accomplished the lethal median concentration (LC50) and the acute toxicity test by oral route in rats (single dose of 4,0 g/kg) and chronic test by oral route (doses of 12,36; 61,80 and 309,00 mg/kg). LC50 was obtained, which indicated low toxicity. In the acute toxicity test neither mortality nor any toxicity signs could be observed. Hematological parameters registered changes in leukocyte count, eosinophil differentials, MCV (Mean corpuscular volume) and MCH (Mean corpuscular hemoglobin) measures and hematocrit. In biochemical parameters, an increase in ALT suggests a possible hepatic overload. The study of the chronic toxic effect about the administration of the aqueous extract (AE) of Petiveria alliacea Linnà dried leaves was investigated on hematological, biochemical, of the behaviors and histological parameters in Wistar rats during consecutive 90 days. The treatment did not cause any clear sings of toxicity and the study AE did not altered the behaviors parameters. The chronic administration of EA failed to change hematological, biochemical and histological parameters, except for an little increase in blood urea nitrogen in treated animals with the higher doses in male rats and usual and higher doses in female rats (13.6, 15.9, 18.9 and 20.4%, respectively); more, an increase of 17.9 and 24.8% in alanine transaminase (ALT) in treated rats with higher doses. In conclusion, evaluation of aqueous extract of Pettiveria alliacea Linà did not induce any hazardous effects in Wistar rats, however, the increase in blood urea nitrogen and ALT suggest a possible renal and hepatic overload
