RESUMO

The writings of the Iberian colonization of the Amazon during the 17th century show an enormous discursive vigor concerning the discovery. The letters, reports, stories, chronicles and memorials dedicate a large part of the occupation of the Amazon region. The writers efforts are in cultivating the greatness of the discovery in relation to the forest, the plant life, the Indians and, above all, the spirit that echoes throughout the history they want to tell. The purpose of this thesis is to capture the projects developed in the Amazon and the construction movements within the colonial Portuguese and Spanish theaters, which were legitimized by the right of discovery, or, better yet, by the right of the memory of discovery, through the development of its discourse in the texts produced during the journeys of the 17th century. Here, memory materializes itself as writing
