RESUMO

This work has the purpose of investigating how the subject of “conformity” or “subjection” in the characters characterization in Rubem Fonseca s short stories articulates with the internal logic of the author’s short fiction. According to the initial hypothesis, the characters of the author s most recent narratives present a view concerning the world (and their own existential condition) more disenchanted, seemingly "conformist", when compared with the characters of the earlier stories (those previous to Romance Negro e outras histórias, published in 1992). In view of the great amount of works, the present study was delimited to ten narratives, belonging to the different "phases" of the author’s fiction. The analysis of those stories was inspired by Roland Barthes s meticulous textual analysis and it was based mainly in the ideas of Foucault regarding the power relationships. This work, finally, enabled us to observe that Rubem Fonseca s characters, particularly in his most recent short stories, are characterized mainly by ambiguity, which makes their characterization in terms of “conformity” or “unconformity” problematical. These notions, therefore, seem relative and questionable in the face of the characters ambivalence and of Rubem Fonseca’s way of narrating.
