RESUMO

The fragmentation process and its perturbation in biotics and abiotics patterns of the mature forest is the main responsible by the biodiversity loss on the Tropical forest. One of these perturbation is associated to the edge effect, where ecological and taxonomic groups undergo differentiation forward fragment core. Here we performed an analysis on the plant guild structure of the edge and core area in a remaining of the brazilian Atlantic forest (3400 ha). We found significant differences between them: in edge area we observed (1) a low plant species richness and diversity, and (2) a few number of shading-intolerant species, whilst in the core we found significantly a larger (1) proportion of emergent and subdossel tree species, and (2) a larger height, and DBH of the trees species. The zoocoric dispersion prevail in both edge and core areas. These results support the negative edge effect upon the ecological and taxonomic groups of plant species in fragmented habitat of the Atlantic forest, and may be used as a predictor of the large-scale disturbance provoked by the fragmentation process. Because of that it is also important for conservation and management plans of the Atlantic forest
