RESUMO

This study has investigated the educational practices developed by nurses within the Family Health Team. The nursing profession in Brazil was marked, since its origin, as responsible for the actions of health education. In the work process of teams of family health, educational activities are included; they should interfere with the health-disease and extend social control to protect the quality of life. Thus, these practices are present in everyday life of nurses and it is important to reflect about them for the construction of an educational practice which must be more aware. Participants were 21 nurses from the Family Health Program in the municipality of Petrópolis, RJ. The research was conducted by qualitative method. The semi-structured interview was used as a technique for data collection, which was treated by the method of analysis of thematic content. Empirical categories were obtained, and showed that, in the scenario studied, the predominant educational practices are made in groups. There is prioritization of teamwork, and the most active professionals are nurses and doctors. For places where the groups work, few health posts have a special room for the meetings; so, the professionals use schools, churches, clubs and residents associations, which are not always considered appropriate. The lack of infrastructure and incentives of the managers do not prevent the implementation of educational practices, but reflect the lack of appreciation of them. The complexity of the work of nurses in the Family Health Program is recognized as a difficulty for the work with education. Most interviewees had some approach, practical or theoretical, with health education during their academic education. Although the predominant focus is preventive, more critical focus approaches are perceived. The nurses perceive that the educational work brings benefic changes to the communities and individuals assisted. Also, they referred to like this work, perceiving it as a part of the work of the nurse and the Family Health Program. The study recommends the training and empowerment of nurses about approaches to health education, as well as the prioritization of health education by these professionals. It also recommends the search for a transdisciplinary relationship between the members of the teams. It suggests the implementation of research about techniques for dealing with educational groups, by health professionals, especially nurses.
