RESUMO

Looking at the development history of the computational environments that support Distance Education (EaD), communication tools were firstly constructed without considering the original proposal of its implementations and users interfaces. Consequently, the offering of online courses in different areas reveals the difficulties that users have to accomplish different pedagogical activities with the available resources, mainly when methodologies that emphasize the interactions and the collaboration between participants are adopted. The objective of this thesis was to investigate how to do the (re)design of synchronous communications tools in order to adapt them to the context of EaD and to permit collaboration between participants of an online course. Two tools were (re)designed according the necessities obtained from studies of the literature and from users of TelEduc: the Chat, in this tool new coordination mechanisms were incorporated to help the management of the participations in group discussions activities; and Direto Online, a program that shows all users that are connected to TelEduc and provides a way to begin a private synchronous talk between a pair of participants. Particularly, Direto Online tool facilitates the social interaction between participants of a course and influences positively the development of collaboration between all them. The description of the design process of these two tools is a result that transcends EaD context because it raises important questions about the communication and the development of community sense. These two main questions must be always considered by anyone who intends to construct computational environments to support online communities. Besides that, from the tests done with users during the design process, it is possible to extract examples of use of the tools that can contribute to the elaboration of proper methodologies focused on EaD context
