RESUMO

Introduction: data on mental and motor development indexes of infants attending public daycares is of extreme importance aiming to create strategies to improve the neuropsychomotor development (NPMD) of at risk population. Objective: to make a literaure review on child development and to present the results of the assessment of mental and motor development indexes of infants in the age group from 4 to 24 months attending public daycares, as well as to show the biological, environmental and socioeconomic risk factors associated with the development of these infants. Methods: this dissertation is presented into two chapters. The first one consists of a literature review through the search in data basis as Medline, Scielo and Lilacs on the main determinant factors of mental and motor development during the first two years of life. The second chapter is about the assessment of mental and motor development of children between the age group from 4 to 24 months attending daycares of Recife municipality. Results: it was evidenced that the biological factors are strong determinants of child development, specially among severely impaired children, however, the environmental factors as the quality of psychosocial stimulation are important factors for infants with mild to moderate delays. The daycare role on child development remains controversial. The infants of our study showed the mental and motor development indexes below the reference population mean. Among the studied variables, only a few biological ones (birthweight and gestational age) showed a significant assotiation with infant development. Conclusion: the studied infants as a whole showed an undesirable development so, a low cost psychosocial stimulation program performed by educators could lead to the improvement od these infants
