RESUMO

The purpose of this descriptive study was to evaluate the iron deficiency and the diagnostic accuracy of iron parameters in children from 2 to 5 years old, attending public day care centers in the city of Recife-Brazil, in 1999. The sample, chosen by aleatory systematic technique, consisted of 162 children of both sexes. The iron status was evaluated by hemoglobin, serum ferritin, protoporphyrin, serum iron, total iron binding capacity and transferrin saturation. The analysis showed a high anemia prevalence, 55,6% of the assessed population and among these, 1/3 presented severe anemia. The total body iron content was low in 30% of children and the deficient erythropoiesis range from 8% to 69,9%. The power screening of biochemical parameters showed protoporphyyrin, ferritin and transferrin saturation were the best in anemia and iron deficiency diagnosis. On the other hand, total iron binding capacity is probably more accurate, to cases confirmation and prediction. The same kind of analysis, to evaluate erythropoiesis, showed hemoglobin, serum iron and transferring saturation more adequate to diagnosis and total iron binding capacity to confirmation and prediction of cases. It was interesting to verify the parameters combination did not produce a significant increase in power screening. These findings shows the necessity of a prompt intervention to guarantee better growing and developing conditions for those children, besides more studies to investigate the diagnostic criterions
