RESUMO

The present work encompassed the development of grain refining processes as applied to commercial purity Aluminium and the Al-4,75 % Cu alloys, without addition of inoculants refining agents. The techniques used employed substrates high heat extracting potential) for copious nucleation of solid and the induction of flow in liquid metal wich encouraged detachment of solid crystals from the surface of the mould wall or feeding channel. The influence of relative motion between liquid metal and cooled substrate (mould wall or feeding channel) was studied in terms of formation of a refined, equiaxed structure. The fluid flows which occured in static, rotated . and. oscillated moulds were analysed and flow in refrigerated channels was also examined. The macrostructures of ingots obtained using mechanical agitation of the mould exhibited evidence of the effect of convectional and Ekrnan flows as mechamisms for crystal detachment from the mould wall and subsequent redistribution in the bulk of the liquid. The ingots solidified in static fed through cooled channels exhibited the effect of rapid heat extraction in producing grain refinement by ensuring the metal entered the mould cavity with low superheat and containing solid particles. For the case of a static mould, an equation was developed for efficient refinement to the pouring conditions. It was shown that of the techniques developed, torsional mould oscillation and the use of a refrigerated feeding channel exhibited refinement efficiency comparable with conventional bath inoculation (with a Titanium-Boron preparation)
