RESUMO

This study describes the development of a/grain refining process for commercial purity Aluminium which is based in the introduction of a volatile addition (Hexacloroethane) to the mould coating. A critical review of the literature was made, which both indicated the originality of the present process and formed a theoretical base from which the concepts involved could be treated during analysis of experimental results. To optimize the process parameters, the experimental examinations were carried out with a range of mould coating, and it was concluded, that one based on alumina powder was most suitable. Using this base, a series of investigations were carried out to find the optimal level of Hexacloroethane, the effect of various process parameters" and to elucidate the mechanism of the refinement effect. Finally, the process was applied to other metals and alloys and the overall performance was compared to conventional techniques such as melt inoculation. It was shown to exhibit favourable results with respect to refining efficiency, ease of application and resistance to effect of superheat
