RESUMO

This paper analyses some urban designing proposals developed for the central areas of Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro and Recife during the period between the 70Âs and 90Âs. It is sustained here that if Urban Designing deals with the relationship of man x the environment and is confronted with the daily life scale as well as the living space of daily space negotiation then working with space as a support for the uses and activities developed in accordance to the praxis of a determined comunity is very important and the questions related to the culture and identity of such community must be taken into consideration. Urban Design as a consolidated course first took shape in the United States and England during de 60Âs and started to take part in the Brazilian professional circles in the end of the 80Âs and beginning of 90Âs. Its practice here is recent either as a course at Universities or as a method of interfering in a given urban space. Therefore, many questions can be discussed about this issue. How were designing proposals developed in Brazil in the last decades of the 20th century? What theoretical methodological basis did architects use in their conception? What parameters were considered when they produced their proposals? Were the proposals produced in Brazil a mere reproduction of Europeans and Norh Americans or else were they simply based on the Brazilian culture and identity? In the end a question arises: how is the relationship between social urban space, culture and identity in the practice of Urban Designing in Brazil? The inicial hypothesis is that inside the Brazilian proposals for Urban Designing, the architects set aside as a less important aspect the cultural and population identity. Thus, the main objective of this paper is to understand how Urban Design proposals in Brasil are methodologically built, focusing the relationship between cultural identities and project proposals. Being so, this work aims to reach the following specific objectives: - To give support in the process of building a methodological basis that comprises a cultural identity in the developing process of Urban Design proposals, strictily related to the local social-cultural reality in which it is inserted; - To contribute for a debate about Urban Design practices developed for Braziliancities through the critical analyses of the presented proposals; - To point out a path to develop an Urban Design work that considers the various local cultural identities. It was found that by incorporating the proposals for Urban Design considering the local cultural aspects they tend to be better accepted and appropriated by their users. In this way, the strengthening of the relationship between space x cultural identity would make the users more caring about public spaces, taking them as part of their personal assets instead of using them as nobodyÂs land
