RESUMO

Aging has been considered as a global growing reality and the principle of the old age as a "social phenomenon" during the second half of the XXth Century. Objective - The author conducted a prevalence study for detection of depressive disorders in the medically ill during hospital stay at clinical wards of The Clinical Hospital from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). Methods â Verification of frequency for depressive disorders in elderly inpatients by using the structural clinical interview for DSM-IV - Clinical Version (SCID - CV) associated to Montgomery â Asberg Depressive Rating Scale (MADRS). Results - The researcher found a prevalence of 40% for depressive disorders in the related population. Comments - These data showed that the incidence of depression during the evolution of a clinical enfermity during hospital stay influenced negatively the individual state of health, quality of life, recovery, being also considered by several researchers as an independent risk factor for 1 year mortality. Conclusions - The author also considers that the approach of the clinical staff to the psychiatric consultation is a very remarkable resource with means to make early interventions able to avoid severe repercussion of this comorbidity and concludes that the adoption of a screening instrument of easy applicability like the Montgomery - Asberg (MADRS) would surely be very efficient and viable in the immediate detection of depressive disorders in the elderly during hospital stay
