RESUMO

Cultural industries in Pernambuco, especially media groups, haven t been target of many studies under the reference of communication political economics. This dissertation comes due to this lack of academic research and the richness of information about communication companies in Pernambuco, taking Sistema Jornal do Commercio de ComunicaÃÃo (SJCC) as a case study. Observing all its phases - the construction of its media (in 1919); its pinnacle, when it became one of the biggest communication companies in the Northeast (in the 1960 s); its bankruptcy in the 70 s and 80 s; and its rebuilding and consolidation as cultural industry - exemplify the development of media in Brazilian Northeast under the influence of the many stages of Brazilian capitalism. The research had a closer look into the diverse managing groups that controlled the company and their relationship to the Government and the political groups that contributed towards the sustainability of this media group. Its methodology is supported by different integrated social political economic and cultural relationships that involve the sustainability of a media group. Thus it was possible to verify that a private communication corporation can attract investors for the political and social value it carries, not only for the financial profit it may represent
