RESUMO

This study describes the informal network structuralization of entrepreneurs affiliated with technological incubators in Recife. More specifically, how exchange relationships occur between the entrepreneurs and their mentors. Seven technological incubators were investigated and more than 50% of the total number of entrepreneurs took part in this case study research. Based on the theoretical approach of social capital, a multidimensional and multimethod model is used. From this model, the cognitive, structural, and relational dimensions are identified for the entrepreneurs support network. The current study focuses over networks characterized by their transactional contents: friendship, information, and trust. The links among social capital dimensions are analyzed for the mentoring network in order to show the construction of these relations in the incubators context. An instrument designed to assess the extent to which mentors provide mentoring functions was developed and validated. The factor analysis showed that the (role modeling and protection) functions of mentoring loaded in different interpretable factors for the new career contexts. The results showed that the trust network is bigger than the information network and that strong ties of relationships are related to the mentoring functions, especially to the psychosocial functions. The findings also showed that the construction of the support network in the context of incubators is based on role diversity. With regard to the networks, mentoring relations are characterized by traditional relations, with few mentors and strong ties
