RESUMO

This study has investigated how adults understand the infantâs development into the communication process in the early infancy. More specifically, adultâs conceptions about human development during the first year of life were focalized. Moreover, the data was collected through the use of Internet. A Web site was hosted at the following URL: www.maebebe.eti.br. The organization of this Web site comprised a questionnaire aiming to characterize the researchâs participant. Following this first page, a Multiple Classification Procedure (three tasks) was applied aiming to sort groups from 20 digitalized pictures (10 Face-a-Face mother-infant exchanges and 10 Mother-Object-Infant exchanges) exhibiting mother-infant communication during the first eight months of infantâs. The conceptual framework that supports this study is based on the perspective that the infantâs development implies the study of the process of transformation of partnersâ communication proposed by Lyra &cols. (Lyra, 1988; 1999; 2000; Lyra &Chaves, 2001; Lyra &Rosseti-Ferreira, 1995; Lyra &Souza, in press; Lyra &Winegar, 1997; Souza, Lyra &Lyra, 1998; Souza, Lyra &Roazzi, 2001). According with this framework, three periods of quasi-stability describe the development of mother-infant communication during early infancy: Establishment, Extension and Abbreviation. More Psychologists visited the site than any other participant with different education background. The analysis made through the SSA â Smallest Spaces Analysis or Similarity Structure Analysis â presents a very consistent result pointing to the differentiation of regions that correspond to Face-a-Face versus Mother-Object-Infant type of exchanges. Furthermore, the differentiation of regions that correspond to the three developmental concepts - Establishment, Extension and Abbreviation â was present in all classification tasks. Moreover, the analysis of the participantâs reasoning for justifying the classification done strongly suggests that the participants have considered the communication process and/or the infantâs development to guide their classification task. This study highlights the possibilities of using Internet for getting data in Psychology and suggests that Establishment, Extension and Abbreviation are strongly concepts for describing the development of the infant embedded into the mother-infant communication process.
