RESUMO

The aim of this research was to analyse an educational sequence of activities of the concept of periodicity using computational simulations, constructed on MODELLUS software. The sequence was designed from preliminary studies, a review of literature and a survey of previous conceptions of the concept of periodicity, presented by pupils of 1rs year of a secondary school in a test. The studies revealed a set of ten studentsâ alternative conceptions of periodicity. After this phase, a pair of students was chosen and undertook the sequence of activities working on pair, interacting between them and with the computer environment. The evolution of studentsâ conceptions of periodicity, on answers and justifications, was analysed considering conceptions previously identified during the test. The results showed that the simulations were used by students as a tool to: validate their answers and to explore the concept of periodicity when they were not explicit on others representations used. Used as a representation, simulations allowed students to overcome some alternative conceptions. However, the limitation of representing an actual phenomenon and the absence of teaching interference during activities allowed others alternative conceptions to appear. We concluded that the teaching approach to concept of periodicity using simulations allowed students to improve their understanding of periodicity, helping them to identify it on different representations. Nonetheless, the algebraic representation revealed to need emphasis when exploring simulations
