RESUMO

The aim of this study was to know the role of fragmentation in the Brazilian rainforest bats communities. Three patches of Atlantic forest were selected â two of them with c.a. 500ha size and one of them with 3.500ha size â in the Usina Serra Grande, Alagoas State, Brazil. The study was carried out from June to December 2002, with six 12m mist-nets settled from 17h to 24h. The animals were identified, measured and classified for feeding guilds, stratification guilds and size classes. We used the Shannon-Wiener diversity index and Jaccard similarity index to compare the landscapes community. An overall sample of 34 species and 734 individuals was registered. In the small patches 214 bats of 21 species were caught and the diversity was 2.84 bits/individuals. In larger fragment 520 bats of 23 species were caught and the diversity was 2.24 bits/individuals. The similarity index between larger fragment and small ones was 29.4%. There were statistically significant differences between the patches when compared bats abundance of guilds and size classes. The forest fragmentation did not decrease the bats richness, but probably changed the bats abundance of some guilds
