Competences to teaching and research: a survey to chemistry engineering professors. / Competências para o ensino e a pesquisa: um survey com docentes de engenharia química.

RESUMO

Teaching and Research are two fundamental processes in a University. They are distinct processes but they have in common the same actor: the university professor. He acts, sometimes as a teacher, in front of the teaching process, sometimes as a researcher, in front of the research process. The university professors work in these two processes consists of a set of operational activities, some of them similar, some of them distinct and specific. This work, to be carried out, mobilizes a set of competences. The aim of this study was to analyze the competences that can contribute to a better comprehension of university professors work in front of these two processes. A model of competences composed by thirteen competences common to two roles of the university professor and a specific competence to each of these two roles was composed. The study was carried out through a survey, whose instrument of research was a questionnaire, put into practice to twenty one departments of chemistry engineering of public universities in Brazil, whose rate of obtained answers was 42,9 %. This survey evaluated the professors competences, as well as a set of factors that can have some kind of influence on these competences. It can be concluded that the competences domain of knowledge area, creativity, planning, ethics and pro activity have similar importance to both processes. By the other hand, the competences inter personal relationship, leadership and empathy are more important to teaching than to research. And, finally, the competences team work and flexibility are more important to research than to teaching. It was checked that the refinement and the evaluation of teaching and research activities are factors that affect the perception of professors in relation to the question of competences. At the end, the obtained results suggest that the higher performance of some universities related to others can be connected with the presence of four competences: domain of knowledge area, creativity, team work and planning.
