RESUMO

This work talk about the construction of our "national identity", through of the Natal s case, its Carnival and the troubled everyday life during the war, in the first half of 20th century; the different conceptions of "modernity" included in artistic and intelectual discussions since 1920 until the end of Second World War. In this context, the contact between Brazilians and Americans maybe can show us that the differences of identity passed over the controversial notion of nacionality
