RESUMO

Changes in the environment such as deforestation, expansion of urban areas and poor housing and sanitation are causing an increasing number of cases of leishmaniasis in urban areas of medium or large sizes. The misinformation of the population about the disease is one of the factors responsible for the increase in its incidence. The aim of this study was to correlate the level of information of the population on leishmaniasis with the dynamics of the disease in Campo Grande, MS. We interviewed 404 individuals living in the regions east, west, north, south and center of the city in proportion to the population residing in each region. It was concluded that the people interviewed have different knowledge levels of the disease; the respondents of the central region were the most informed and those of the eastern region, with the lowest social level, poor education and poor infrastructure, the least informed.
