Beside that, verifies possible regional differences on the food consumption pattern of cities that were part of the "Multicentric Study About Diabete Mellitus in Brazil", represented by Northeast region (Recife and João Pessoa) and Southeast region (São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro when the results were compatibles). The sample of the present study belongs to Recife and João Pessoa, and has male and female subjects between 30 and 69 years old. The distribution of the sample was 397 cases at Recife and 314 cases at João Pessoa, divided according to the diagnostic of diabetics of Group 1 (previous diagnostic), diabetics of Group 2 (recent-diagnostic) and non-diabetics of Group 3. The sex, the age and the obesity were considered variables for the possible association with Diabetes Mellitus. For the characteristics ofthe food consumption pattern, the frequency of consumption of food was applied and the daily familiar consumption of suggar and fatty matters. The results of the analized presented a higher frequency of diabetics males compared to females. The ages between 50-59 years old showed higher percentage of diabetics individuaIs in Group 1 from Recife (45,3%) and at João Pessoa from Group 1 ( 60-69) and Group 2 (50-59) both with 50% of diabetics individuals. The frequency of obesity between diabetics was higher when compared to non-diabetics at Recife in Group 1 and 2 (67,9% and 76,5%, respectively) and João Pessoa in Group 1 (60,9%). The results for the food consumption pattern of diabetics individuaIs compared to non-diabetics, presented in the grouped items of sugared solids 9 sweet and dessert) and liquids ( soft drink, tea and coffee) in Group 1 of João Pessoa less frequency of consumption of these items, while Group 2 of Recife has higher frequency only compared to Group 3. Group 1 af Recife and João Pessoa presented low consumption of energetic fats ( rice, spaghetti and tapioca and com meal) compared to non-diabetics. Between fried food, regulator food and proteic food the consumption pattern was similar between diabetics and non-diabetics. For the regional differences on the food consumption pattern between Northeast and Southeast regions there is a notable preference of consumption for vegetal oils at São Paulo, in which the quantity is two times higher then in Recife and João Pessoa that shows an equilibrated consumption between oil, vegetal fat and animal fat. In the Northeast Region, the higher consumption of com meal was observed specially at João Pessoa, compared to the low consumption frequency of this food in the Southeast region.
