RESUMO

This dissertation, developed within the theoretical principals of Lexical Studies and Terminology, is a syntactic-semantic account of a new category proposed by Faulstich (2004), terminological brazilianisms. We propose an analysis based on grammatical categories from which we chose the verb as our object of study. The data, compiled from the eletronic version of the Novo Dicionário Aurélio (NDA), consists of 51 verbs that belong to 19 different specialized areas. This dissertation also intends to present a vocabulary of verbs that, according to our criteria, are considered to be terminological brazilianisms. In order to analyze syntactical and semantical aspects of the 51 verbs, we looked for theoretical support in the basic principals of the Theory of Functional Grammar and the abstract underlying structure of the clause (Dik, 1997); we also based our study on the principals of Valency Grammar (Borba, 1996). We propose a classification of these verbs in different classes, considering the dichotomy that exists between common language and specialized language. With this study, we intend to discuss the lexical enrichment that brazilianinsms represent within a terminological framework. In comparing each valency matrix it is observed that the argument selection and verb specialization in a domain will reflect, not only in the semantic aspects, but also in the syntactic aspects. Therefore, we looked for a syntactic-semantic classification for the verbs analysed in this dissertation. The verb classes allowed us to observe changes in classes, possibly sufferd by the verbs in the course of specialization. The analysis resulted in the realization that, from the 51 verbs taken, only 5 remained in the same class with the same argument selection; 10 were considered strictly terminological in nature; and 36 presented some kind of modification, either in class, or in argument selection.
