Avaliação qualitativa dos aspectos psicologicos do aconselhamento genetico atraves do estudo prespectivo do atendimento das familias

RESUMO

The purpose ofthis study was to evaluate the psychological processes involved in the GeneticCounseling trying to provide directions to a professional performance, if necessary. Ten families were selected. They were interviewed in three situations: first of ali, when the family arrived at the Genetic Service of the Hospital das Clínicas de Ribeirão Preto to be attended; after the third evalution in the Genetic Service, after Genetic Counseling has been finished. We used a semi structural questionaire, specially prepared to attend the purposes of this study. The qualitative analysis ofthe data was organized by subjects. The data achieved in the first phase made clear that the couples are guided to the Service without information about the type and the reasons of the treatment. They were in different phases of an acute suffering process (chocked, refusal, guiltiness, anger); they knew little or nothing about their child s problems and wrongly explained the cause oftheir child s abnormalitiesAfter the third consulatation at the Genetic Service, the data showed that the parents are awared of their child s phenotype, their developmental problems and the necessary treatment; some parents keep denying the diagnosis and others replace this feeling by anger and sadness; they questioned the informations and begin to explain the matter based on cientific information received.Finally, when the Genetic Counseling has been concluded, it has been observed that: the families have appropriately understood the information they received; the Genetic Counseling has cleared up their doubts, diminishing their guilty feeling; no modification at the couple s relationship as consequence of the Genetic Counseling has been related. Based on these data we suggest the supervision of the professionals who work in this area and the inclusion of a course about the psychossocial aspects of the Genetic Counseling in the Medical education
