RESUMO

Studies have shown that the average loss of 60% of excess weight is related to the improvement of several comorbidities, however, there is insufficient information about the activities and physical performance after weight loss by bariatric surgery (BS). Objectives of this study were to evaluate the influence of loss of excess weight (LEW) in physical capacity and respiratory function in women undergoing bariatric surgery, evaluate the physical capacity and functional respiratory and compare them with healthy and normal weight women also assess the quality of life (QOL) of these women after surgery. The study included 35 female volunteers, 25 post-operated BS for at least six months (BG) and 10 healthy at the same age group (CG). Significant correlation was found between% PEP and expiratory reserve volume, and other positive correlations between field tests and spirometric variables, respiratory muscle strength. The GB women showed results within normal values for muscle strength testing, spirometry and respiratory muscle endurance, but reduced in relation to physical capacity in the field tests. It was also observed that the LEW contributes to the improvement of life quality and resolution of comorbid conditions. We can conclude that, under the terms of respiratory health, women operated not differ from normal weight women, the same age. Moreover, it can be concluded that the instruments used in this study are able to assist in evaluating the improvement in lung function and exercise capacity of patients postop.
