RESUMO

The aim of this study was: (a) to evaluate some contaminates effects from the environmental passive of a deactivated lead smelter at the city of Santo Amaro da Purificação in Bahia, verifying the possible exposition/absorption correlation of lead and cadmium in respect to mutagenic studies using cattle and women populations from the neighborhood of this smelter and (b) to evaluate the risks on infantile population as well by the dosage of the lead and cadmium concentrations on children?s blood. All the lead and cadmium analysis from the different matrices (cattle and human blood, human urine, soil and grass) were carried out using graphite furnace absorption atomic spectroscopy. The averaged Pb values found in animals of the Exposed group were among the highest in the obtained data where the mutagenic tests applied showed chromosomic alterations in 18.9 % of the analyzed cells. On the other hand, the Control group showed only 2.3 % of these chromosomic alterations. Pb and Cd levels were also determined in grass and soil (profile) and were collected following the predominant wind direction until 14 km from the smelter. It was observed the direct dependence between the decreasing of the distance from the smelter and the increasing of the Pb levels in these matrices. All the lead and cadmium analysis from the different matrices (cattle and human blood, human urine, soil and grass) were carried out using graphite furnace absorption atomic spectroscopy. More than 87 % children of this group showed Pb levels higher that the maximum limit recommended by CDC (10 mg/dL). The average Pb values (arithmetic media: 9.70 5.70 mg/dL and geometric media: 8.52 1.62 mg/dL) and Cd (arithmetic media: 0.258 0.246 mg/dL and geometric media: 0.221 1.58 mg/dL) found in Control group samples were the first local Pb non-exposed children data.
