RESUMO

The present study analyse how the Parque Nacional do Catimbau (Catimbauâs National Park) was established, a process which was conducted by the IBAMA. The way the local population participated in this establishing process is part of this analysing, as well as how IBAMA has managed this environmental protected area up to 2005. The approachâs focus was ecotourism and its effects on local in habitants. The positive and negative sides of this implementation process were identified and analysed, being they of socio-economic type or of environment type. Institutional changes in the area were also evaluated and local participation in the management of the Park as well. Methodologically, bibliography about ecotourism, national parks and reserves and geography were evaluated, and they together form the theoretical part of the work. Then, empirical data were collected following the lines suggested by methodological and theoretical discussions around the theme.
