RESUMO

The objective of this study was to analyze the meaning of the health and illness concepts for persons with Diabetes Mellitus who attended the Prevention and Treatment Service for Diabetic Retinopatia at Hospital São Julião, in Campo Grande, MS. The study was carried through during the months of July and August in 2004, in days of outpatient attendance for a group with Diabetes Mellitus. Thirtyfive persons answered a semi-structured interview that was recorded entirely. The questions addressed individual and family characteristics as well as the health and illness concepts. It was verified that the majority of the sample consisted of females, with a total of 22 (62.9%) participants and 13 (37.1%) males. The majority of the sample was with age between 41 and 70 years, 28 (80%) participants, and 26 participants had education level lower than junior high (74.3%). The majority of the participants associated the state of good health to well being and, many times, even depending on medication for the control of the disease, they considered themselves healthy because they did not feel pain or dissatisfaction. With frequency, the meaning of disease was related to pain and discomfort. This perception leads to a careless attitude regarding their visit to the health center. This illness has a silent start, and when it presents symptoms, it is already in an advanced state. Great part of the participants looked for the service after the doctors orientation that follows the patient. This information showed the great importance of the healthcare professionals awareness in informing the participants about the preventive treatment. The women attended the preventive service more, and they presented, proportionally, less gravity within the ophthalmologic diagnostic.
