RESUMO

There are few experimental studies that try to find relations between anxiety and learning difficulties in reading and writing. The following study, apart from focalizing on that point, it also used conceptions in anxiety trait and anxiety state, what is very rare in literature. In this way, the goals of this research were to analyze the existing relations between the levels (high and low) and anxiety types (trait, including and excluding the lie- and state), and the reading and writing performance, considering gender and age. The sample researched was 112 people, between 8 and 9 years old, from two public schools. All the subjects have been classified by three dictations and, afterwards, have been evaluated in a reading test and two anxiety instruments, one of them was the Anxiety Trait-State Inventory for children referring the state, and the other one was the Expressed Anxiety Inventory for children and teenagers (including and excluding the lie) referring to state. The data found have been submitted to analysis of variance and the global results made evident that there was a significant relation between the high anxiety state and the difficulties in reading and writing. It was also possible to express a tendency among the older children to be more anxious than the younger ones. Referring to the gender, the results showed up confusing when related to the levels and kinds of anxiety.
