RESUMO

The development of animal production and feed animal market makes the search for alternative feed stuffs necessary. Brazil is one of the largest producers of passion fruit and residue, from which 65 to 70% is residue. Thus, the work objective was to verify: changes in chemical composition by storage period of the " in natural" residue; the drying behavior of passion fruit residue; the possible changes in the chemical composition of the residue before and after the drying process; and if the by product can be used for animal feed formulation. The work included a storage experiment and a drying experiment. The residue was stored in opened condition or ensiled for a period of O, 15, 30 60, 90 and 120 days. After each period, samples were collected for analyses. The drying of the residue "in natural" was made on temperatures of 60, 70 and 80°C and drying air speed of 0,28 and 0,56m/s. The laboratory analyses (chemical composition) were humidity, crude protein (PB), ether extract (EE), crude fiber (FB), acid detergent fiber (FDA), neutral detergent fiber (FDN) and mineral content (MM). The results found for the stored product didn t present great variation in chemical composition among the periods. The dried material, in spite of difference in behavior of the drying conditions, showed that the material can be used in animal feed formulation. The calculate effective diffusivity range from 1,43x1 0-10 to 2,60x10-1Om2/s, for the different drying conditions. For drying of the residue the best drying condition was the temperature of 70°C and Vsec. 0,28m/s
