RESUMO

ln the present work, chromatographic silica was chemically modified with the silylant agent: [3-(2-aminoethyl)aminopropyl]trimethoxysilane (AEAPTS). After this reaction, the residual silanol groups were deactivated with chlorotrimethylsilane. These silicas were reacted with copper ions in a methanol medium. This cation was strongly adsorbed through complexation by the pendant ethylenediamine groups attached on the silica surface. The aim of Cu (II) ion immobilization is to verify the possibility of using this new kind of material as a stationary phase in High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Thus, chromatographic separations were made by using 150 x 3.9 mm HPLC columns packed with modified silica, with and without copper ions. The influence of this cation on the chromatographic separation of some polyaromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzene, naphthalene, anthracene, pyrene and nitrobenzene and some aromatic amines, aniline and N,N-diethylaniline. It was shown that Cu ions adsorbed on the stationary phase have an important role in the separation of basic samples, increasing the retention time of the amines. The separation of the mixture of polyaromatic hydrocarbons was successfully performed with both columns.
