RESUMO

The focus of this investigation rests on contemporary Angolan Capoeira practice in the city of Salvador, Bahia in terms of a corporeal agent acting out Capoeira play. The hypothesis herein presented is predicated on the assumption that Capoeira contains technical and symbolic facets that are useful for theatrical training. Thus, the technical and symbolic sources of Angolan Capoeira are studied with the purpose of illustrating their potential for enriching the expressive body of the actor. This proposal merges two distinct theoretical fields: Capoeira and theater, with Theatrical Anthropology as the point of departure. The Escola de Capoeira Angola Irrmãos Gêmeos (ECAIG) is chosen as the focus of this study because it incorporates Capoeira plhilosophy and practice fundamental to Capoeira Angola. The Escola is characterized primarily through data collected through oral communication. In regards to methodological implementation, the approach is qualitative, of descriptive nature, and hypothetico-inductive insofar as it also draws from bibliographical and documemtary sources; in addition, it includes field work involving interviews and observation from the perspective of the participant in Capoeira activity; a human laboratory consisting of actual Capoeira training also plays a part. Application of this hands-on training includes key facets of Capoeira based on criteria such as: exploration o equilibrium, opposition, and possibilities of delay and creating syncopated bodily rhythm by means of delaying movement.
