RESUMO

Histochemical detection of collagen and elastic fibers was carried out in duct-ligated submandibular glands of mice. A progressive increase of collagens fibers was observed both in extra-lobular and intra-lobular space. Elastics fibers were not found in the intra-lobular region of normal submandibular glands. This tissue was only found around dilated duct-like strutures, 8 days after ligation. Electron mlcroscopy showed extensive morphologic changes for acinar, ductal cells. Myoepithelial cells showed extensive "wrinkling" of outer plasma membrane leading to a thickening of the associated basement membrane. We belive that changes in the synthesis of growth hormones and other biologically active peptides that occur in the acinar and ductal cells during atrophy may influence mesenchymal cells to proliferate and to deposit large amounts of extracellular components
