RESUMO

This work intends to evaluate the potential risks of environmental degradation of the Jaguaribe Riverâs watershed, considering the physical aspects, the use of the soil, the human development and sanitary problems. This watershed is located in the south coast of the State of ParaÃba, in the municipal district of JoÃo Pessoa, among the coordinates (UTM) 9216000mN/299000E and 9206000mN/287000E. Its limits are at east the Atlantic Ocean, at west the Marà Riverâs watershed, at north the Mandacaru Riverâs watershed and Sanhauà Riverâs watershed and at the south the watersheds of the rivers CuiÃ, Gramame e Cabedelo. The materials used in the research were maps in the scale 1:25.000, an image of the CBERS satellite, CCD sensor, and data of the demographic census 2000 (IBGE). The physical aspects and soil use were appraised in the whole watershed area taking for parameter the geotechnic scenery, and the image classification. The human development conditions and sanitary problems were appraised in all of the areaâs census sections, through the IDH (Index of Human Development) and ISA (Index of Environmental Sanitation) indexes, respectively. The application of IDH index presented coherent results with IDH-M for all the sections. The ISA index showned relatively homogeneous results in the watershed central areas with higher values, while sanitary problems in outlying areas and marginal areas of the watershed were shown. It was also verified the predominance of irregular occupation in the watershed urbanized area and the socioeconomic factors influence in these areas occupation through the observance of IDH and ISA indexes. About the areas that show geotechnic fragility, the study area presents quite accentuated instability on what concerns to the process of soilâs use and occupation. This method has proved itself quite appropriate for application in watersheds located in urban areas, without continuous monitorment or data, elucidating the great potential of integrated use of geographic information systems and remote sensing to fast answers and low cost evaluations
