RESUMO

In the last years, proved by statistics, it is possible to verify that the average education level of the Brazilian population is increasing. That phenomenon has also been noticed in several countries of the world. In spite of, countless works along the last years have been point out to an existence of an incompatibility between education and occupation, being in Brazil or in other parts of the world. This incompatibility is characterized when an individual presents a superior (or inferior) level of education that is necessary to execute some work, being usually classified as overeducated (or undereducated). The aim of this dissertation is to evidence if this phenomenon also occurs with the households of the Metropolitan Area of Salvador, especially the employed population. Therefore, this work was built starting from the data with regard to the twenty larger occupations among the years of 1996-2006, that jointly represent more than 50% of the total employed. The data used in this work were obtained with the Pesquisa Emprego e Desemprego, carried out monthly in the Metropolitan Area of Salvador. The results confirmed the hypothesis of the existence of an incompatibility between education and occupation, corroborating with the empiric evidence, although in a more reduced scale.
