RESUMO

This study proposes to review the level of competitiveness of the fertilizers cluster in the metropolitan region of Salvador. Specifically it is intended to: analyze the evolution of the international, Brazilian and Bahia industry, identify and discuss the main limitations of the Cluster and analyze the strategies of the fertilizers industry. The main assumption is that the industries that make up the cluster are losing competitive advantage as compared to clusters of other states and also for international competitors. To analyze competitiveness the models proposed was Estudo da Competitividade da Indústria Brasileira. The subject is discussed based on the Model ECIB of analysis of competitiveness, which considers Factors Company - those that the company has the power of decision, Structural - those that the company has limited power to influence, and Systemic - those that the company has a few or no power to influence. This study also shows basic concepts of the soil fertility, with the main physiological functions of nutrients. Here, the history of the fertilizer industry in Brazil is divided in five timelines and shows the most significant events of each one. This study was conducted through data analysis and interviews with Commercial Management of companies in the fertilizers cluster. Ultimately, this study proposes the identification and analysis of the main factors of competitiveness, highlighting their weaknesses and competitiveness strengths. The expectation is that the study contributed to a greater awareness of the problems affecting the competitiveness of the cluster, and stimulates a discussion on the development of the fertilizer industry in Bahia.
