RESUMO

Prematurity characteristics can cause difficulties in the establishment of an adequate and efficient feeding in preterm infant, becoming necessary to use alternative methods until the baby is able to breastfeed. The objectives of this study were: to carry out a literature rewiew of the usual methods of making the transition from tube feeding to full breastfeeding with preterm infants, in the first chapters, and to describe the feeding transistion (relaction, translactation and the tube-breast) with 432 preterm infants in the Instituto Materno Infantil Prof. Fernando Figueiraâs (IMIP) Kangaroo Mother Care Unit. The mean time of duration of the transistion was 11 days, with mean of weight gain 17g/day. A small percentage of problem (1,6%) was related to the feeding. At the discharge, 90% of the babies had left in full breastfeeding. It still has in literature much controversy in relation to the most adequate method. The methods used in this study, relactation, translactation and tube-breast seem to be efficient as methods for the feeding transistion with preterm infants, assisting them to initiate breastfeeding
